Lutron is a world leader in smart lighting. Lutron offers three control system options: Caséta, RadioRA 3, and HomeWorks.
As a Lutron dealer, we can typically tell which control system to install based on a homeowner’s needs and preferences. But if you’re curious, here’s what each system does differently and how they may (or may not) be suited to your home in Oakland, Livingston, Genesee or Lapeer counties.
Lutron Apps: Connected Living Throughout Your Home

Add personalized scenes to control multiple lights and shades together at the touch of a button. Create a “movie” scene that dims lights and lowers shades as the movie begins. Or create a “goodnight” scene that turns off all your lights and closes shades before you drift off to sleep.

Schedule lights and shades to adjust automatically at set times of day. Turn on your porch light at sunset and turn it off at sunrise. Turn lights on to a soft level and slightly raise shades every morning as you head into the kitchen for coffee.

The Smart Away feature randomly turns lights on and off during the evening when you’re not home. You can manually trigger this feature in the app at your convenience or automatically trigger it if geofencing is turned on.

Which Lutron System is Right for Me?

Caséta is Lutron’s most basic lighting control system, referred to as a “mini system” for single rooms or small homes. Caséta is a wireless solution that uses radio frequencies to communicate with lights and motorized shades. It’s best for homes up to 2,500 square feet and can control up to 75 devices. That may sound like a lot, but consider how many window shades, thermostats, indoor and outdoor lights you’d like to control.
Caséta is a great option for small-scale installations, but its control and automation capabilities are limited. It can be controlled by the Pico remote and Lutron app, but not dimming panels. More complex automations require programming that Caséta is not built for.
With a range of smart dimmers, switches, shades, and plugs for indoors and out, Caséta offers easy-to-use lighting control for the whole home.
Adding the smarts to the switch is what sets Caséta by Lutron apart. Regular smart bulbs don’t function when the switch is off or the Wi-Fi is down, but with Caséta smart lighting control, you can keep the bulbs you love and simply add the control you want.
Add a smart hub for enhanced, worry-free lighting control, including schedules, voice control, and more. The smart hub enables Caséta to work with more smart home devices than any other smart lighting control brand, so you have the flexibility to build the smart system you want and control it how you like with the free Lutron app, smart remote, voice assistant, or automated schedules. And since it can control up to 74 devices, you can be confident that you can expand the system as you go.

RadioRA 3 can cover up to 7,500 square feet, 200 devices, and five wireless temperature sensors, making it a step above Caséta for larger houses.
RadioRA 3 is a wireless whole-home lighting system. Since it’s wireless, RadioRA 3 is an ideal choice when it’s not feasible to run wires through the walls.
RadioRA 3 connected lighting control by Lutron gives you powerful control over your lights, Lutron smart shades, and other smart home devices, all wrapped in a beautiful design that will complement any décor. So, you can effortlessly create a comfortable environment throughout your home with the app, voice assistant or a simple touch of your keypad.

Finally, there’s HomeWorks, Lutron’s most sophisticated whole-home system. HomeWorks is capable of both wireless and wired communication, and with wiring, comes much more reliable performance and more customized programming. HomeWorks is the best option for new construction, as your home’s walls will be open for low-voltage wiring.
HomeWorks can cover up to 50,000 square feet and 10,000 lighting zones, making it the best choice for large estates and luxury homes. Homeworks can be installed with centralized load panels thus eliminating ugly multi-gang switches in room.
